How to use it

  1. Drop the .docx file. The tool reads it and lists how many headings, tables and images it found, plus any content it had to skip.
  2. Choose paper size, orientation and margins. Leave Output on Automatic unless you need the exact rendering of image pages.
  3. Press “Convert to PDF”, check the page count and download.

Example

A 2-page cover letter (Calibri 11 pt in Word, one heading, four paragraphs, a signature image) converts to a 2-page A4 PDF of about 60 KB with selectable text; the heading keeps its larger size and bold weight, the image is embedded as-is. The same letter with image pages at 200 dpi is about 450 KB and its text cannot be searched.

How the conversion works

mammothconverts the .docx XML into semantic HTML (Word’s Title/Subtitle styles become headings, “Code” becomes preformatted text). The HTML is laid out off-screen with a print stylesheet in points and rendered by the same engine as the Markdown to PDF tool: jsPDF html() for selectable text (page breaks between lines, 14 standard fonts) or html2canvas page slices placed with pdf-lib for image pages, cutting on blank pixel rows so lines are never split.

What is lost, and why

  • Fonts: a browser cannot read the fonts installed on your computer, and the PDF standard fonts cover Latin-1 only.
  • Page layout: mammoth deliberately exports structure, not layout – columns, floating text boxes, headers and footers, and manual page breaks are not represented.
  • Tracked changes are shown as accepted; comments are dropped.
  • Password-protected .docx files cannot be opened.

Questions

Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?
No. It is a faithful re-flow of the content with a neutral stylesheet. For a pixel-exact copy use Word's own "Save as PDF" or print to PDF; use this tool when you only have a browser or do not want to upload the file.
Can I convert .doc files?
Not directly – the binary .doc format is not supported by mammoth. Open the file in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, save it as .docx and convert that.
Why did the output switch to image pages?
The document contains characters the standard PDF fonts cannot encode (the Output field lists them). Image pages render everything the browser can display, at the cost of searchable text.
