Q&A

How pace and speed are worked out

Your pace is your total time divided by the distance, shown as minutes and seconds per kilometre or mile. Your speed is the distance divided by the time, in km/h or mph. The two describe the same effort from opposite directions.

Tip

Knowing your pace lets you plan even splits in a race and target a finish time, while speed is handy for comparing runs with cycling or other activities.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate running pace?

Divide your total time by the distance. For 10 km in 50 minutes, the pace is 50 ÷ 10 = 5 minutes per kilometre.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time per distance (minutes per km), while speed is distance per time (km per hour). A pace of 5 min/km is a speed of 12 km/h.

What is a good running pace?

It depends on fitness and distance. Many recreational runners average around 6-7 minutes per kilometre, while faster runners go well under 5.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply your pace per kilometre by 1.609 to get pace per mile, since one mile is about 1.609 kilometres.

What pace do I need for a marathon time?

Divide your target time by 42.195 km. A 4-hour marathon needs about 5:41 per kilometre, or roughly 9:09 per mile.
