How to use it
- In Weighted grade, enter each assessment with its score and its weight in the course. Switch to points if you have 42 / 50 rather than a percentage.
- Leave the score empty for anything not graded yet. The weighted average, the points secured so far and the highest grade still possible update as you type.
- Press Use for the final grade (or open the second tab) and enter the final exam’s weight and the course grade you want.
- Read the score you need on the final. If the goal is already locked in or impossible, the tool says so instead of showing a number.
- Adjust the letter scale if your school uses different boundaries, then copy the summary or share the link.
Example
Homework 80% (weight 20%), midterm 90% (30%), final exam not yet taken (50%). Weighted average so far = (80 × 20 + 90 × 30) ÷ 50 = 86.0%; points secured = 16 + 27 = 43% of the course; highest possible = 43 + 50 = 93%. To finish with 90% overall, the final needs (90 − 86 × 0.5) ÷ 0.5 = 94%. Aiming for 95% would need 104% – out of reach without extra credit.
Formulas
points → percent: score% = earned ÷ possible × 100
weighted average: Σ(score% × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) over graded rows only
points secured: Σ(score% × weight) ÷ 100 (weights out of 100)
highest possible: points secured + (100 − graded weight)
required final: (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w w = final weight ÷ 100
≤ 0 → already achieved; > 100 → unreachableThe average over graded work normalises the weights to the share that is complete, so it is the mark you “currently hold”; the points-secured figure assumes the course totals 100%. If the weights you entered do not add up to 100 the average is still right, but the course-level figures are flagged. Scores above 100% are accepted for extra credit. The final-grade mode treats everything except the final as one block with your current average; rounding rules, drop-the-lowest policies and grade curves are not modelled – check your syllabus.

Questions
- What do I need on my final to pass or to keep my grade?
- Open "Final grade needed", enter your average over everything else, the weight of the final and the grade you want. The result is the exam percentage that lands you exactly on the target; anything higher gives more. For a pass mark, enter the pass threshold as the target.
- Why does the average change when I leave a score empty?
- Empty scores are treated as not graded yet, so the average is taken over the graded weight only. The "points secured" row shows the part of the full course you have already earned, which does include the missing weight as zero.
- My weights add up to 110%. Is the result wrong?
- The weighted average is still correct – each score counts in proportion to its weight. Only the "points secured" and "highest possible" figures assume a 100-point course, which is why the tool warns you.
- Can I use a different grading scale?
- Yes. Open "Edit scale", change the letters and their minimum percentages (for example Distinction ≥ 70, Merit ≥ 60, Pass ≥ 40), add or remove rows, and the letters update everywhere. Minimums must go down from row to row.
