What is BAC?
Blood alcohol content (BAC), also called blood alcohol concentration or blood alcohol level is a measurement of alcohol intoxication used for legal or medical purposes. For example, a BAC of 0.10 (0.10% or one-tenth of one percent) means that there is 0.10 g of alcohol for every 100 ml of blood, which is the same as 21.7 mmol/l.[2] A BAC of 0.0 is sober, while in the United States 0.08 is legally intoxicated, and above that is very impaired.[1] BAC levels above 0.40 are potentially fatal.

What is BrAC?
In certain countries, alcohol limits are determined by the breath alcohol content (BrAC), not to be confused with blood alcohol content (BAC). For example, In Greece, the BrAC limit is 250 micrograms of alcohol per liter of breath.
Frequently asked questions
What is the legal BAC limit for driving?
It varies by country. Many set it at 0.05% or 0.08% blood alcohol concentration, while some apply zero tolerance, especially for new or professional drivers.
Which countries have a zero alcohol limit for driving?
Several countries enforce a near-zero or zero BAC limit, including much of Eastern Europe and parts of Asia. Always check the local rule before driving.
What is the difference between BAC and BrAC?
BAC measures alcohol in the blood, while BrAC measures it in the breath using a breathalyser. Many countries set legal limits for both.
How long should I wait to drive after drinking?
The body clears about 0.015% BAC per hour, so the only safe approach is to wait long enough, or not drive at all after drinking.
Does the BAC limit differ for new drivers?
Yes. Many countries set a lower limit, often zero, for learner, novice and professional drivers than for experienced ones.
